The art of politics is so old that there rarely is little new in it. The link below connects you to a 1964 essay (it began its life as a lecture the year before) by Prof. Richard Hofstadter on America’s “paranoid” swings in politics. In it, Hofstadter, a professor of American history at Columbia University, argued that America periodically goes “nuts” in how it uses politics to affect–or at least try to affect–change. It was a remarkable picture of American politics in 1964 and remains remarkably accurate yet today.
